Red Republic

History/Politics, Germany 2019

In 1918, a bloodless revolution took place in Bavaria. After the fall of imperial rule, a veritable laboratory of democracy emerged - with both grassroots democratic and socialist experiments. 60 years later, we interviewed eyewitnesses of the Munich Councillor Republic about their experiences. These video recordings, restored only in 2018, with a carpenter, a merchant, a professional soldier, a student, a bookbinder and a friend of G. Landauer, K. Eisner and E. Müsam and the anarchist writer Augustin Souchy form the basis of our film about the birth of democracy in Bavaria.
